Full Screen Gmail Webapp with Retina Icon on Your iPhone 4

Fsgmailretina
If you're an iPhone owner and a Gmail user, you might've saved a Gmail bookmark to your home screen for convenience. But if you're like me, you want more; you want to run Gmail as a separate webapp and get rid of Mobile Safari's toolbars. I know several people have done this, but each method l found involved a time-consuming redirect and left me with an ugly non-retina Gmail icon.

So, I whipped up a solution. Grab your iPhone 4, and in Mobile Safari, navigate to this page:

http://solomito.com/u/gmail

Once you're there, click on the link.....and you will get a BLANK PAGE. Add the blank page to your home screen. (Yes, tap the middle icon in Safari's bottom toolbar, then select "Add to Home Screen" to add the blank page to your home screen.)

Then tap the new FS Gmail icon and you're good to go.

In case anybody’s wondering whether this is safe, here’s what the base64 decodes to:

…in other words, no worries that Mr. Solomito might be intercepting your Gmail login credentials. This is a safe and effective trick. Thanks, John!
